A MODERN CHRISTIAN CREDO
by Br. John Martin,OSB
That there is only one God, one Infinite Reality!
That its nature is Love, Fullness and Unfolding!
That the whole of creation is a manifestation of God.
That it bears the image and likeness of God.
That it is ultimately one with God.
That the vocation of creation is to be fruitful and to multiply,
and for human beings it includes unfolding (manifesting) divine attributes
of love and compassion in relationships.
That human beings have the gift of self-consciousness,
giving them the possibility of being ignorant of their true vocation and
also the gift of remembering it.
That when human beings are ignorant of their true vocation, they live in
bondage creating evil, disharmony, division and violence within the world.
That when human beings remember their true nature, they live in freedom
creating goodness, harmony, unity and peace within and in the world!
That human beings evolve in their relationship with God, with one another
and with creation until they realize their oneness with them all.
That all human desires are ultimately desires for God, the infinite
happiness, but ignorance projects them in the wrong direction.
Human desire should not be renounced, but should be transformed
(elevated) into the desire of God.
That in the Biblical tradition, Jesus Christ modeled this truth and invited
everyone to do the same!
That Jesus Christ refused to deny his spiritual union and accepted
his humiliating death on the cross for the spiritual growth of every single
human being and for the unity and liberation of mankind.
That Truth is Life and it cannot be put into the tombs of narrow mental
constructions, for it will rise and always be victorious!
That life and death are part of the manifested world.
But, our ultimate nature is LIFE that knows no death. Amen.
As residents of Inner Sky, we get many who inquire about our religious and spiritual foundations. As Benedictine Oblates, we are Christian in foundation, and actively contemplative in practice. We are not affiliated with a denomination, but follow the teachings of Jesus to live a life of transformation and love as presented to us in the Gospels. Within the Camaldolese Benedictine charism, we live our life in a balance of solitude, community and ministry. Our Christian path is enriched by the philosophy and practices of the yoga tradition, most notably the focus on union with God, ourselves and others. Ultimately, our path is one of subtraction and softening our personal protective structures of the false self, to include the letting go of our attachments to possessions, identities and outcomes. This journey calls us to be vulnerable and available, so way may live and love from the Center as God intended.
"Neither shall they say, See here! or, see there! for, behold, the Kingdom of God is within you."
